| Item no 704
An attractive antique birdbath comprising a carved stone mortar on a tapered round base. The mortar is carved with lobed handles and v-shaped outlets with an internal rim for a lid or a lead liner. The origin and original purpose of the mortar is obscure, it could have been some kind of travelling font or a specialised mortar or a stoop to hold holy water in a church or monastery. It now makes an intriguing garden ornament with the added attraction that it is probably very old.
Probably medieval
24" diameter x 28" high
