| Item no 743
An antique rectangular lead cistern, the front decorated with two geometric panels enclosing vases of flowers and dated 1757 and with remnants of the original plumbing connections. Lead cisterns of this type were used in the 17th and 18th Centuries to store household water for large houses and were decorated on the visible sides usually to include the date of installation and the home owner's initials. This cistern is in good condition for its age with an attractive weathered grey colour and could, potentially, be incorporated into a wall fountain. A similar, slightly larger, lead cistern dated 1759 was sold at auction in Sussex on 21 October 2008 for £8200 plus £2408.75 auction surcharge.
Mid 18th Century
