| Item no 178
A large buff stoneware Warwick Urn on an associated stoneware plinth, the urn stamped on the base 'Terracotta Mark H Blanchard. Blackfriars Road. London'. The Warwick Urn was an 18th century reconstruction using antique marble fragments excavated at Hadrian's villa in the 1770's. It became the property of the Earl of Warwick and remained at Warwick Castle until 1977 and is now part of the Burrell collection in Glasgow. Mark Blanchard originally worked at the famous Coade works in Lambeth before setting up on his own circa 1839, and becoming renowned in his own right. His early production, of which this urn is an example, was in the same pale buff colour as Coade stone and has the same durable qualities. Blanchard bought some of the moulds sold at the Coade factory dispersal sale in 1843 and there is a strong likelihood that this urn was originally a Coade pattern. The pedestal is associated and probably Scottish.
