A rare original Georgian lead cistern embellished on the front with geometric panels enclosing dolphins and flowers and dated 1736. These cisterns were used to provide more affluent houses with piped household water and stored water from a supply network that may have been pressurised only for a short period each day by a windmill or similar. They were individually made to fit specific locations and decorated on visible surfaces with motifs favoured by the the household which usually included the date of installation.They make interesting planters or water troughs and are often used against a wall. This one was previously in a garden in Lewes, Sussex .
