| Item no 119
A fine and rare William and Mary lead cistern decorated on three sides with ribbed panels depicting various heraldic motifs. The front bears the date of manufacture, 1692, and the initials H.N.M of the original owner of the property for which the cistern was commissioned. Originally used to store rainwater for use within the house, the vast majority of lead cisterns have been melted down to reuse the metal, especially during times of war. They make marvellous, characterful planters.
late 17th century
