| Item no 733
A large, weathered sandstone wellhead with a tall, wrought-iron overthrow and projecting acanthus carved corners on a stepped square base. The wellhead itself is in three sections with a lions mask carved on two sides and an amphora on the other two sides and the bottom edge of the top section carved with a continuous rope twist detail. Although it looks like an Italian wellhead, the core has not been fully carved out so it cannot have been a working wellhead and must have been intended purely as an ornamental garden feature. It came from the formerly extensive garden of an Edwardian villa in Church Stretton, Shropshire. Apparently the original owners of the villa were involved with a local quarry and there is no doubt that this impressive feature was a special commission.
