A large antique sandstone seat from Worcestershire, the massive rectangular top on two matching stone supports. Reputedly this seat was originally from an old monastery but the actual source is not known. Certainly the top, which was presumably originally a lintel or step, is very large and heavy and is unlikely to have originated from a domestic building. Following the Dissolution of the monasteries lots of choice building materials found their way into the wider community.
18th century or earlier
