A weathered statue of Venus bathing, after the original by Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain, on an old portland stone column. The figure is made from reconstituted Italian marble and is exceptionally well weathered with lots of moss and lichen. The position of the head looking down means that the statue is best appreciated on a suitable plinth which brings it up to eye level. The original marble statue caused a sensation when first exhibited in Paris in 1768 during the reign of Louis the fifteenth.
20th century (statue).
67" high overall (statue only 42.5" high).
