Large Stone Water Trough

Item no: 1737

A large stone water trough, rectangular in shape with a very thick base and three holes along the top of the front face which were presumably for tethering animals while they drank. Although bought from a private English garden, this is an imported trough, probably originating from China, which has two outstanding qualities. Firstly, it definitely holds water and secondly, the three holes in the front are equally spaced and so water could run down the front to be caught in a channel and recirculated to create a continuously flowing water feature.

Probably 19th century.
