Old Standing Stone

Item no: 1758

An old limestone standing stone carved on one side with a shallow recess. There is an interesting background to this stone which was dug out of the ground many years ago on top of Gretton Hill, Gloucestershire. The shallow recess was probably made to capture water from a natural spring for farm animals and the stone is likely to be ancient. It may even have been a standing stone before being reworked for another more practical purpose. It makes an interesting vertical accent for a garden creating a variety of shadows and silhouettes.

NB. this stone does not have the covering of moss and lichen that would be expected because it has been for many years under a dry and shaded leylandii hedge. The usual colonisation moss and lichen should occur relatively quickly once this stone is exposed to the elements.

Medieval or Earlier.
