Antique Sandstone Staddlestone

An antique sandstone staddlestone from South Shropshire, the round top on a separate tapered round base. The squarish block at the bottom would originally have been under ground giving extra stability to this stone in its original function as a base for a hay rick or granary. This is a particularly good large staddlestone with lots of character. 

18th/19th Century.
