A pair of weathered composition-stone sphinxes lying on integral rectangular bases. These are well modelled figures in the oriental style popularised by Thomas Hope during the Regency period in England. Sphinxes were also popular in France but were usually more elaborate, sometimes incorporating caricatures of leading figures.
