An antique marble putto, standing naked next to a rocky outcrop and holding a basket of fruit, on a tapered square bale. This is a rare garden statue which might be quite early and retains its main features despite being heavily weathered. Carved puttos were popular subjects in early formal gardens, most of which disappeared when the fashion for English 'landscape parks' took hold in the second half of the eighteenth century.
Probably early 18th Century.
