A set of four hand carved limestone putti from Northern Italy, each semi draped and holding a different attribute. This type of carved stone cherub traditionally held a symbolic motif representing a theme, such as the four seasons or the elements. In this case three of the fours seasons are represented, Spring, Summer and Autumn, and one element, Water, represented by the boy holding the shell. This probably reflects the personal preferences of the original owner rather than having any underlying symbolism.
All of these figures have a similar weathered patination having been outside in the English climate for over 40 years. Matching in both scale and style they have great potential to enhance a formal garden where symmetry and balance is required.
Priced as a set of four putti.
20th Century.
