An old cider mill from Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, consisting of two halves together with the original large roller stone. Cider mills were once driven by farm animals such as heavy horses or oxen and were used to crush apples prior to extracting the juice for cider making. Typically they were made, as is this example, from hard-wearing millstone extracted from specialist quarries. This mill has an exceptionally large roller stone which almost exactly covers the centre of the mill and provides an unusual opportunity to create a banked circular flower bed.
18th/19th century.
96" diameter.
