Antique Italian Terracotta Urn

An antique Italian terracotta urn on a square terracotta plinth. The large urn is decorated with a foliate rim and two female masks symbolic of plenty linked by boldly modelled swags of fruit and flowers. It is stamped on the base 'Raffaello Agresti Impruneta'. The Agresti family were long established makers of high quality terracotta in the Tuscan village of Impruneta and Raffaello is recorded as a sculptor working there in the latter part of the 19th Century. The weathered terracotta base is also from Tuscany and is stamped 'Francesco del Re, Val di Pesa'. (Footprint of plinth, 22' square).
